Film-Ocean, a leading ROV services company in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, undertakes a wide range of projects using its large fleet of ROV systems. Mike Mackie, Head of Operations, shares his insight on the onshore preparation that starts months before an offshore campaign. “We have a large, modern fleet of ROV systems, which allows us to offer a very diverse range of services. Whether working in deepwater locations, installing complex subsea equipment or carrying out inspections of existing infrastructure, the process is the same. The key to successful service delivery lies in understanding the client's needs and project requirements, ensuring that our assets and offshore crews are thoroughly prepared to provide exceptional service.”
Ross Latham, Project Manager at Film-Ocean, emphasises the importance of preparation for the success of offshore projects. He states, "It begins with comprehending the project requirements. We thoroughly assess the scope of work to determine the most suitable ROV the specific tools and sensors required, and any unique challenges the project may pose, such as deepwater conditions or strong currents."
Ross emphasises the importance of detailed planning and coordination. "We collaborate closely with the client to gather all necessary information including the scope of work, environmental conditions, and any potential hazards. Using this information, we develop a comprehensive project plan that outlines every step, from equipment preparation to deployment and operation."
Once the project plan is established, the workshop team takes over. Skilled technicians and engineers ensure that the equipment is prepared to the client’s specifications and needs while completing all preventative maintenance routines and verifying certifications. Matt Gill, Workshop Supervisor, describes the process: "Our workshop team ensures that the ROV system allocated to the project is in optimal condition. We provide assurance to the client and our offshore colleagues by conducting rigorous equipment testing, ensuring that both the ROV and the project-specific tooling and sensors are fully tested before the offshore phase begins. The new facility in Ellon is excellent, with a large internal test tank that allows us to wet test all the ROVs we maintain, helping to minimise the risk of asset downtime when offshore."
With the ROV ready, the final step is preparation for transport. Paul Conner, Logistics Coordinator, explains, "We meticulously pack the ROV and all associated equipment to prevent any damage during transit. Logistics play a crucial role in this process, guaranteeing that everything arrives at the offshore site on time and in perfect condition."
Mike Mackie, Head of Operations, concludes, "The success of an offshore mission depends on thorough preparation. Every step, from meticulous planning and rigorous testing to careful logistics, is essential. Our goal is to ensure that when the ROV is deployed, it performs flawlessly, enabling our clients to achieve their project objectives efficiently and safely."
